Area Health Events Strong in November
In my search to bring you some great information this week, I found myself digging into the D.C. health and wellness scene to find some great suggestions. To my surprise, D.C. area health and wellness events continue year round! I mean, it’s easy to get people to try a farmer’s market, or yoga in the park on a spring day, but it’s pretty brave to keep people interested in their health when we’d all like to be sleeping in and putting extra marshmallows in our cocoa.
Not only are fall health events prevalent, they’re educational! What we lose in outdoor fun in the sunshine, we gain in the ability to attend really interesting, creative and cool educational events that are way more than just a class. Here are some of the upcoming best of the best when it comes to this fall’s area health events:
Disaster + Wilderness First Aid Course
Information: http://washingtondc.eventful.com/events/disaster-wilderness-firs-/E0-001-058615489-5@2013111608
Saturday, Nov. 16
$175/per person, however attendees are certified in wilderness first aid at the course’s end.
How cool is this? Sierra Club DC is hosting a wilderness first aid certification course, ideal for casual hikers, campers, boy scouts and anyone who finds themselves off the beaten path. I myself have been certified in first aid and CPR, but didn’t even know wilderness first aid was a separate certification! Students will learn everything from managing the delay in care that can occur in waiting for first responders to basic wilderness survival. Perfect if you’re an Appalachian Trail hiker or just a big Walking Dead fan. More sign-up information if you follow the link.
Medical Museum Science Café: ‘Scarred for Life’

Las Angeles artist Ted Meyer presents “Scarred for Life,” an exhibit about his experience with Gaucher’s Disease, as well as the experiences of others. A stripped-down look at the realities of overcoming health and wellness struggles presented by the National Museum of Health and Medicine. The event is open to the public. Thanksgiving Zumba Jam

$15 in advance/$20 at the door
If you’re in the area for the holiday this year, get a jump on your turkey dinner damages by attending the Thanksgiving Zumba Jam with Zukossa at Shake Shake Fitness in Silver Spring. If you’re the one cooking, leave a note for someone to watch the potatoes and turkey while you get out of the house and sweat it up! Ninety minutes of fast-paced Zumba should go a long way towards earning you that extra slice of pie.
Let us know if you get out and enjoy any of these upcoming events! Comment and tell us how it goes, bring a friend and share the love.
