Five Products to Ditch in Warm Weather

When warm weather rolls in, most of us immediately swap our sweaters and heavy coats for shorts, skirts and airy summer dresses. So, why shouldn’t we treat our skincare routine the same way? Winter is all about moody matte lipstick and dark, sultry eyes, while summer is the perfect time to rock that bronzed goddess glow. Ready to revamp your routine? Let’s take a look at five products you need to ditch this season.

1. Heavy foundations

When it gets hot, heavy foundation isn’t your face’s friend. In fact, if your product clogs your pores, you could be inviting acne. Don’t think all you need to do is grab a bottle of Murad or Proactiv OTC treatments; according to many reviews, that’s not going to be your miracle go-to product.

Instead, consider swapping your current foundation for a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. Both products offer lightweight coverage to address blemishes and even out your skin tone without feeling heavy or cakey in the summer heat. Even better, they generally act as multi-tasking miracle workers, combining coverage with antioxidants and SPF to protect and regenerate your skin.

2. Powder blush

Powder blush can be your best friend during the winter, but as the mercury rises, it can add to that heavy feel and cakey look that we all want to avoid. Instead, look for products that can withstand the heat, such as cream-based blushes or cheek stains. For extra longevity, you can set your blusher with a hint of invisible setting powder. Don’t overdo it, though, or you’ll lose that dewy glow.

3. Matte lipstick

Matte lipstick is beautiful and bold, but a little too heavy-handed for most fresh, summer looks. The formulas are also incredibly drying, which won’t do your poor lips any favors in the harsh summer heat. Ditch your matte lipstick for satin finishes or sheerer versions of your usual go-to colors. Your lips will thank you for it.

For a more natural look, skip lipstick altogether and simply apply a lick of nude or shimmery lipgloss to your lips to keep them looking luscious. Or, if you aren’t a fan of that sticky feeling, try out a balm-tint hybrid, like Benefit’s Cha Cha Balm.

4. Dark eyeshadows

No matter how much of a vamp you are, summer is the time to break out some lighter eye shadow colors. This doesn’t mean that you need to limit yourself to nudes or soft pinks, though. For a bold and refreshing seasonal look, sweep aqua eyeliner across your upper lash line and wing it out. Pair this pop of color with a coral lipstick or lip stain.

5. Finishing powder

Finishing powder is another awesome beauty product that is great for the colder months, but not always a great choice for summer. You probably know this firsthand if you have ever tried to apply makeup on a boiling hot day. Invariably you will be a little sweaty and those beads of moisture will cling to your finishing powder, creating a cakey makeup meltdown. Instead, set your makeup for the day using a setting spray. The right setting spray will lock your look in place all day long (no more smudged eyeliner!) and help you achieve a polished matte or dewy complexion, depending on the formula you choose.

We cycle our clothing in-and-out of rotation depending on the season, so it only makes sense that we’d do the same with our makeup. Achieving a glorious summer glow is all about ditching heavy-weight products and picking out a few lightweight superstars to get you through those humid, makeup melting days. Just follow the tips above and you will look like a summer goddess without even breaking a sweat.
