Sensible Ways to Be Fashionable in Summer
Summer is an interesting time. With the temperatures continuing to rise and more weekend getaway trips showing up on your schedule, it may be time to shake things up a bit and do some shopping. Yup, the ever warmer weather and the increasing weekend jaunts may require some new outfits. It may be time to go shopping! You still have time to enjoy the dog days of summer with a blend of sass and style.
While your quest to follow summer fashion trends may be as humble as simply finding a way to look less boring, here are three tips that you should keep in mind before whipping out your credit card.
1. Take care of your feet.
Your selection of shoes will fall into three distinct groups: athletic, every day and beach.
Athletic footwear
Since you are going to do quite a few athletic things, from hiking in the mountains to walking several miles each day to stay in shape, you need to look after your feet by wearing support socks and athletic footwear. While you may not be making a fashion statement, you will certainly avoid all the painful foot issues associated with spending a lot of time on your feet.
Everyday footwear
When you are doing everyday things, from going to work to shopping with your friends, look for summer shoes made out of natural materials like leather, suede and canvas. These are much healthier for your feet then shoes made out of faux leather, plastic or some other synthetic material.
The reason for this is threefold:
- Your feet will be able to breathe better.
- You will have more flexibility as you walk.
- Since your feet expand in summer because of increased blood flow, you will experience less pinching.
Beach footwear
If you are at the beach, then your choices are simple: either go barefoot, wear flip-flops or choose sandals that don’t chafe and are comfortable enough to wear all day long.
2. Take care of your comfort and well-being.
When considering what style to wear, from a midi skirt to miniskirts and from pants to shorts, the main thing to consider is the material. The less porous the material, the more difficult it will be for your body to regulate its temperature.
If you wear cotton or linen, your clothes will feel cool and crisp. Linen is stronger than cotton, and since it’s a more breathable fabric, it conducts heat better. And, contrary to misinformed public opinion, silk is another excellent material for summer. It not only looks good, but it is also highly breathable.
If, however, you wear poly-blends, trying to keep up with cutting edge fashion trends, it is much harder for your body to regulate its temperature. In fact, the less porous the material, the more likely you are to sweat profusely. Instead of wearing crisp clothes, you will be wearing soggy clothes that cling to your skin.
So while you can be reasonably fashionable in natural garments, you should sacrifice blindly following trends that are based on poly-blends. Unfortunately, these are the ones most heavily promoted by the fashion industry.
3. Take care of your budget and wardrobe.
What if you already have a wardrobe that’s overflowing with your fall and winter clothes, and you aren’t emotionally invested in wearing the latest summer fashion trends? It doesn’t make much sense to simply throw out all your out-of-season clothes and start over. One simple and elegant solution to this dilemma of having too much but not enough of the right things is to use your local tailor to transform your clothes.
Not only will you save money, but you won’t have wasted all the money you spent on clothes earlier. The question of what to do with your old clothes that are still in good condition but completely out of fashion is particularly heartbreaking if some of them fit perfectly and finding perfectly fitting clothes is not something that happens often.
All these problems can be solved by finding a good tailor. A tailor can do wonders when it comes to transforming your garments. They can be made to look completely different. Here are some examples:
- A tailor can transform a long winter skirt or spring midi skirt into a mini skirt.
- A tailor can transform those pants that fit perfectly into shorts.
- A tailor can transform that snappy blazer into a snappy cropped jacket to wear over your elegant summer dresses.K/li>
Putting things in perspective
Here is the thing: it is wonderful to have a sense of fashion, but don’t become a slave to it. As mentioned earlier, don’t wear fashionable clothes that only use poly-blend material that makes you feel hot and bothered all day long. So, here’s a sensible priority list to consider when deciding on fashion:
- First, focus on comfort. Does the attire feel good against your skin?
- Second, focus on convenience. Do you find the attire practical and affordable?
- Third, focus on fashion. Do you like the new look? It may be popular, but do you like it?
