Area Restaurants Offer Super Bowl Specials
Pigskin fans everywhere are getting ready for next Sunday’s big game when the NFC champion the Carolina Panthers take on the AFC champion the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., and be televised on CBS. This year’s halftime performance is headlined by Coldplay with Beyonce and Bruno Mars making appearances.
Instead of spending time in the kitchen cooking for your guests, many area restaurants are offering to-go specials you can pick up and take home for your game viewing party. Others are showing the game on big-screen TVs in their bars and offering food and drink specials.
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, 1308 G St. NW and 7511 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, is serving a football-shaped Boston Cream doughnut with a vanilla pastry cream filling and a chocolate glaze. Six doughnuts are $15 at the D.C. store. The Falls Church location is selling a special package with six of the doughnuts along with 24 spicy garlic or Sriacha fried chicken wings for $45.
Del Campo
Del Campo, 777 I St. NW, has food and drink specials at its bar during the game. The $6 drink specials include the bartender’s choice of a shot and a beer; a Black Velvet with Guinness stout and Brut champagne; Bloody Maria; Bloody Mary; Michalada; a margarita; or Modelo Especial, Tecate, Mahou Estrella and Founders All Day IPA beers. Food specials, priced at $15 each, included a chivito sandwich Chivito sandwich with seared ribeye, mortadella, ham, olives, provolone, heart of palm and fried egg; the Del Campo smoke burger with grilled bacon, grilled avocado, onions, smoked tomato and provolone; chori pan, grilled chorizo, pulled pork, red cabbage slaw, sweet pickle and salsa criolla slow roasted Wagyu brisket with coleslaw, smoked tomato, Manchego cheese and smoked hollandaise; pan con chicharon with pork belly, sweet potato emulsion and pickled chilis; or a Peruvian chicken sandwich on a baguette with radish, cabbage slaw, jalapeno and avocado.
Kapnos & G Sandwich Shop
Kapnos, 2201 14th St. NW, is teaming up with neighbor G Sandwich Shop to offer to-go specials with plates of spit roasted lamb, chicken and suckling pig; Greek-spiced wings; gyros; chili; classic Greek spreads; and 3-foot subs and sandwich platters. The order form can be downloaded and emailed to eat@kapnsosdc.com by Feb. 3. Orders must be picked up between 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 7.
Kapnos Taverna, Yona and Pepita Cantina
Kapnos Taverna, 4000 Wilson Blvd., Ballston, is offering plates of spit roasted lamb, chicken and suckling pig; gyros; and classic Greek spreads along with Yona’s dry fried wings and Pepita Cantina’s tacos, chips and salsas, which are in the same building. All orders must be placed by 5 p.m. on Feb. 3 and can be picked up between 1-4 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday. The order form can be downloaded and emailed to eat@kapnostaverna.com.
Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap
Lena’s Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap, 401 E. Braddock Road, Alexandria, has a special Big Game to-go platter. For $40, fans can order a mixed greens salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, shaved red onions and a garlic-red wine vinaigrette; 24 Italian wood-fired, parmesan or buffalo chicken wings; four giant 10-ounce meatballs stuffed with fresh mozzarella and served with marinara sauce and grilled focaccia. Each order serves six.
Fans who watch the game on the big screen TVs in the restaurant’s bar area will get complimentary wood-fired almonds and happy hour specials from 5-9 p.m. including select pints for $5, featured wines by the glass for $6 and cocktails, such as a blood orange Negroni, a Disaronno Smash, a Tuscan Breeze, a Nonna, a Sicilian spritzer, or an Italian margarita for $7. Happy hour bar snacks will be available during the game priced from $5-$7.
Macon Bistro & Larder
Macon Bistro & Larder, 5520 Connecticut Ave. NW, host a watch party starting at 4 p.m. with the game on the restaurant’s two 55-inch flat-screen TVs. Drink specials include $5 Handsome Beer Co. drafts, , $6 wines and $8 cocktails made with One Eight Distilling products. Snack specials include spiced pecans, deviled eggs, pork cracklins and Essie’s biscuits with honey butter and pepper jelly for $7 each. Larger bites priced from $9-$24 include chicken biscuits with pepper jelly; a mini Macon burger with fingerling potatoes; shrimp and grits and fried chicken. Sides, priced at $8 each, include collard greens with bacon, garlic and white wine; Anson Mills grits with aged cheddar and macaroni and cheese with aged cheddar, béchamel and sourdough crumbs.
Nopa Kitchen + Bar
Nopa Kitchen + Bar, 800 F St. NW, will celebrate Super Bowl 50 with a special watch party and food specials. It will show the game on a 50-inch flat-screen TV with $4 draft beers from the teams’ home states including Fat Tire from New Belgium Brewing Co. based in Fort Collins, Colo., and Milk Stout from Duck Rabbit Brewery in Asheville, N.C. There will also be bar snacks honoring the two teams, such as Southern-style deviled eggs with crispy pork rinds, pimento cheese and jalapeño, and chicken bog croquettes with roasted chicken, Carolina Gold rice and Surryano Ham served with a buttermilk-lemon aioli in honor of the Carolina Panthers. Dishes honoring the Denver Broncos include crispy Rocky Mountain oysters with “cowboy caviar” and green chili hot sauce, and Fat Tire Beer cheese soup with chorizo verde and queso Chihuahua. The snacks are $6-$10 each.
Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza
Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza with locations in Columbia Heights, Friendship Heights, Silver Spring and Clarendon, is pitting the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers against each other in a pizza battle for this year’s big game. The finalists will face off on two themed pizzas inspired their hometowns. On Feb. 7, all four locations will be serving two specialty pizzas — the Denver “Omelet” with Italian ham, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, hollandaise-style sauce and cheddar and mozzarella cheese and the Carolina BBQ with pulled pork, Lexington-style BBQ sauce, pickled red onions and Monterey Jack and mozzarella cheese. The pizzas come in 18-inch for $26, 14-inch for $30 and 9-inch for $9.25. They will only be available for to go, delivery or dine-in while supplies last.
Texas Jack’s Barbecue
Texas Jack’s Barbecue, 2761 Washington Blvd., Clarendon, is offering a special to-go menu for the game. For $15 per person, fans can order smoked meats such as brisket, chicken and sausage served with sides such as coleslaw, warm potato salad or raw carrot salad. Orders must be placed at 703-875-0477 by 5 p.m. Jan. 31 for pick up between 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Feb. 7.
