What a TV Show Can Teach Us About Love

By this time almost everyone around you has probably seen or at least heard of the hot Netflix show 13 Reasons Why. The show is not only interesting, but very impactful for young audiences who are struggling to build relationships both romantically and platonically. Being a teenager is hard enough, but feeling like you are going through it alone can feel impossible at times.

Even as adults, this show is relatable and reveals the importance of being there for the loved ones in your life. Here are a couple take aways from the show, and how it relates to your relationships in life:

Communicate always

If you learned anything while watching 13 Reasons Why, you know the true power of communication. It can make or break any relationship. Communication should always be welcomed, whether it be causal conversation or serious topics. If you ghost or completely ignore your significant other, it will only hurt them or send them the wrong message that you don’t care. So don’t, don’t ignore someone special and remind them it is okay to vent or chat anytime so they are never alone.

Really listen

In addition to always being down to talk, be willing to actually listen. Really notice the tone in what they are saying to make sure they are being totally open or if something is wrong. Sometimes people try to hide how they really feel because they don’t want to see like a bother. But, if you show you are actually listening, your other half may be willing to open up despite wanting to be closed off.

Be affectionate

Don’t hold back about how you feel. If you love your significant other, you should share it. It is better to share your feelings than never having the chance to at all. So do it when the moment is right or all the time, just make sure your loved one feels loved, and you are left with no regrets.

Don’t be spiteful

It is easy to get mad at someone you care about, but being vindictive shouldn’t consume your relationship. When you do something out of spite, it is just a form of hate, which isn’t healthy in a relationship. It is okay to get mad at one another, but not to seek revenge in an sort of way. That will just lead to your relationship’s demise.

Stay supportive

If you are annoyed at your significant other, it is not easy to want to be around them. But if you know they need your support, you have to put your pride to the side and be there. Sometimes people act out when they are going through more serious, personal stuff. So make sure your significant other knows you are there for them even through the toughest of times.

Relationships are meant to be an unbreakable bond. They aren’t easy, but that is life. Don’t ignore someone special in your life just to prove a point. Be there for them through thick and thin, and show them they aren’t alone. If 13 Reasons Why teaches us anything, it is that you don’t know what is going on in someone’s mind. They can have friends, parents or be in a relationship, but they can feel alone inside. Make sure to always show that someone special that you are there so they never feel that way.
