Quarter-Life Crisis

Going with the Flow

When you’re 20-something, you feel like you should already have your life together. But reality is that your 20s are meant to be full of adventures and mistakes. How else are you supposed to grow into a wise old person with life-learning stories.

I’m not a love guru by any means, but I hate seeing my friends in a hurry to find the one to grow old together. If they meet someone and they aren’t perfect, then they screw them over. All I want to do is tell them YOLO, but apparently telling your friends that you only live once isn’t quality advice. So I’ve thought of a couple things to help them out during their quarter-life crisis.

Break up season

Don’t feel like you have to break up with your significant other. If they are holding you back in any way or treat you badly, then go for it. But if you’re just not sure if they’re the one, don’t rush the break up. You obviously enjoy each other’s company, so don’t kick them to the curb just because you don’t envision a future with them. It will most likely happen on its own, but until then just enjoy the ride. You’re young, just focus on the present and stop planning so far ahead.

Wedding bells

Don’t envision a future together with any and every one who glances your way. Some people say you will know when you know, and that’s cool. But seriously, what does that really mean? I know couples who have married young and it’s been successful, but I consider them lucky. Reality is that there’s no rush to marry. All you are doing is officially making one and other liable for the other. I’ve been with my boyfriend for nearly two years, and we talk about marriage in the far future, but that’s it. If you love someone, it’s okay to fantasize about a future together, but it shouldn’t be your main focus. Live in the now and have fun together; let the serious stuff come naturally as you get older.

Baby fever

Babies are cute. Babies are great. But if you’re not ready for all that responsibility, then just don’t. It’s okay to be reckless and wild when you’re single and dating, but if a baby is in the picture, the fun needs to be toned down. All of a sudden you aren’t the center of attention in your own life, and you need to grow up faster than you anticipated. So if you still want your freedom, remember to wrap it up. Young moms are indeed awesome, but they sacrifice a lot. If you aren’t ready, just be careful and live out your youth, don’t share it.

My last piece of advice is just have fun while you’re young. It’s not like the fun ends as you get older, but it does change and can be limited at times. Enjoy the moment and be adventurous. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the road. Date Mr. Right Now and don’t worry about your future hubby and kids. Focus on you for as long as you can and love your life.
