Diamonds are cut and formed using four different processes before they arrive at the jewelry store. These processes are called cleaving, sawing, cutting and polishing. Once these processes are finished, diamond cutters can form them into brilliant pieces of art that go beyond your standard diamond shape.

Jewelry trends may come and go, but diamonds are forever. Discover the most popular diamond shapes you need to know about.

1. Round

To achieve the characteristics of a diamond of a round-cut shape, most of the rough of a diamond is cut away. If you are wondering why round diamonds are around 35% more in cost, it is because it takes more time and skill to achieve this shape. The round engagement rings are elegant and traditional.

Its symmetrical shape and simple design have made this the most desirable cut when looking for a classic solitaire. When in doubt, go with a round cut.

2. Oval

If you like the round shape but want a unique cut, an oval diamond should suffice. Oval-shaped diamonds have the same amount of sparkle as a round diamond, but offer a unique silhouette, which gives it more dimension and flair.
People who choose oval-shaped diamonds tend to stay ahead of what is trending.

3. Princess

The princess cut is a modified square diamond that resembles an inverted pyramid that has 4 beveled sides. This cut is popular amongst brides. With 21.06% of all diamonds sold being a princess cut, there is no question that the trend will continue well into the future.

4. Cushion

Cushion cut diamonds, also known as pillow-cut, are a good mix of round and princess cuts. They have rounded corners and more prominent facets, which enhance the brilliance of the diamond.

5. Emerald

Emerald diamonds have long facets and have a strong resemblance to stairs. Emerald diamonds tend to produce more clarity, and the long lines will give this shape sophistication and class.

6. Pear

Pear-shaped diamonds are the ones who want to be bold and adventurous. The unique teardrop shape can make hands look slimmer and more elegant to the eye.

These diamonds have excellent symmetry and provide great brilliance in the light. If you want to think outside the box and go bold, choose a pear-shaped diamond.

7. Marquise

This elongated diamond will look bigger yet make hands look slim and slender. The marquise diamond is considered a fancy shape and is recognized for royalty and celebrities alike. If you want to go with class and sophistication, choose a marquise diamond.

8. Heart

This is a modified brilliant-cut diamond that is unique among all the other diamond shapes. Symmetry is a vital characteristic to have with this diamond, and it is advised that you get a diamond that is at least more than .50 carats. Due to its features, the heart shape can be unrecognizable with a size below that carat weight.

Which shapes have the best sparkle?

Traditionally brilliant-cut round diamonds will give you the most sparkle because of its 58 facets. But this depends on the quality of the cut and diamond grade.

When it comes to choosing the right diamond shapes, go with the one that speaks to you. Go to your local diamond dealer and try all of the different shapes they offer and select the one that expresses your personality and looks the best on your finger.
