’Twas the Weekend Before Christmas
There are only a few days until Christmas and AAA warns that Americans are traveling in record numbers this year. It forecasts 107.3 million Americans will take to planes, trains, automobiles and other modes of transportation during the year-end holiday period from Dec. 23-Jan. 1 – a 3.1 percent increase from last year. The majority of travelers – 94.7 million – will hit the road, a 3 percent increase. If you are staying in the DMV this weekend, there are a few things besides shopping to occupy your time. Also, be sure to check out our listing of Christmas light displays and other holiday activities.
It may be Christmastime, but Metro isn’t giving riders any presents with work continuing this weekend. Red Line trains single tracks between Van Ness-UDC and Friendship Heights with trains running every 18 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont, and every 9 minutes between Farragut North and Silver Spring during daytime hours. Blue and Orange Line trains single track between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW with trains operating every 20 minutes. Silver line trains will run every 20 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston ONLY. Green and Yellow Line trains run on regular weekend schedules. Also, on Christmas Day, trains willrun from 8 a.m.-11 p.m.
Handel’s Messiah
This holiday epic, which explores the story of Jesus Christ as the Messiah, is performed at the Kennedy Center each year. The National Symphony Orchestra will be joined by guest singers and the University of Maryland Concert Choir at the beautifully decorated Concert Hall to tell Handel’s riveting tale through song that continues to reign after nearly three centuries as the ultimate celebration of holiday cheer.
Dec. 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F St. NW. Tickets are $15-$99.
Holiday Film Festival
The Warner Bros. Theater at the National Museum of American History hosts a Holiday Film Festival through Christmas eve. : At this time of year, Love, Actually — Friday’s movie — is a film that inspires very strong feelings — both from fans who claim it is a romantic holiday tale about finding true love, and naysayers who think it is a steaming pile of plot holes and misogyny. Forget the haters (at least for one night) as the film fest kicks off with a Love, Actually-themed party. (Think cocktails in a souvenir cup, Instagram-ready photo backdrops and a mass singalong to All I Want For Christmas Is You, followed by a screening of the film.) The rest of the weekend includes Die Hard on Saturday (hey, it takes place on Christmas eve), Home Alone and The Nightmare Before christmas on Sunday and It’s a Wonderful Life on Monday.
Dec. 21 at 6 p.m., Dec. 22 at 3 p.m., Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. Tickets for Love, Actually are $35 with a happy hour, while other screenings are $10 for adults, $8 for military and seniors and $6 for youth.
Kings
Kings, written by Alexandria native Sarah Burgess, is a comedy about money, power and what democracy actually looks like. Newly elected congresswoman Sydney Millsap arrives in D.C. armed with her ideals and sense of duty, and refuses to play by the rules of special interests or her own party. Kate is a lobbyist who backs winners. So when she crosses paths with Rep. Millsap, she dismisses her as a one-term neophyte…but ends up hearing a call to conscience she thought she’d left outside of the Beltway.
Through Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and Jan. 1 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Studio Theatre, 1501 14th St. NW. Tickets are $20-$62.
A Christmas Messe: A Banquet of Seasonal English Music
This is the final weekend to hear strings, harp, organ and a voice ensemble perform traditional Yuletide music during A Christmas Messe: A Banquet of Seasonal English Christmas Music. Students at Oxford wrote A Christmas Messe, a holiday play in which the characters were components of a Christmas dinner – Trencher and Tablecloth, Bread and Salt, and King Beef and King Brawn – arguing over who should be served first, framed by soliloquies from the hungry Belly and ended by intervention by the Cooke. In conjunction with the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Churchill’s Shakespeare exhibition, the Folger Consort will take on English carols and arrangements of later favorites, including Greensleeves by Vaughan Williams. The music will be accompanied by a reading of A Christmas Messe by actor Rick Foucheux.
Dec. 14-23 at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday at the Folger Theatre, 201 East Capitol St. SE. Tickets are $35-$57.
The Play That Goes Wrong
Sherlock Holmes meets Monty Python in The Play That Goes Wrong, which has inspired gut-busting laughs in London and on Broadway. It is the opening night of The Murder of Haversham Manor, but circumstances couldn’t be worse – the leading lady is unconscious, the corpse can’t play dead and the actors can’t seem to get their lines right. Mania and madness ensue.
Dec. 18-Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and 2 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Dec. 26 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F Street NW. Tickets are $49-$149.
Brunch with Santa
Arena Stage’s Richard’s Place Café will host a special prix-fixe brunch with Santa this weekend. The entire family is invited to hang out with Ol’ St. Nick and enjoy breakfast classics, including scrambled eggs; choice of bacon, turkey sausage or veggie sausage; breakfast potatoes; grits; salmon cake; fruit salad, Mediterranean pasta salad; yogurt parfaits; and pastries. Everyone gets a free picture with Santa and there will be plenty of holiday spirit to go around.
Dec. 22 and 23 from noon-2 p.m. at Arena Stage, 1101 Sixth St. SW. Tickets are $22 per person.
Christmas caroling
Instead of knocking on doors to go Christmas caroling from house to house, head to the Wharf and sing by the water — and even onstage at a live music venue. Seasonal singers can gather at the pier starting at 5 p.m. and join in holiday songs on the waterfront before detouring to the nearby Pearl Street Warehouse for a performance. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington joins the festivities at 6 p.m. for some additional holiday cheer. Santa will even take time out of his busy schedule to join in the fun. You can also by s’mores buy the fires pit and visit the lighted Christmas tree.
Dec. 22 from 5-7 p.m. at District Pier, 101 District Square SW. Admission is FREE!
Christmas Illuminations
Rescheduled from last weekend, George Washington’s estate showcases its holiday grandeur during its annual Christmas Illuminations. Fireworks choreographed to holiday music begin about 8:15 p.m. Before that, enjoy being serenaded by local choirs, visit re-enactors from the First Virginia Regiment, learn 18th-century dance moves and meet George and Martha Washington. You can also watch colonial artisans demonstrate the 18th-century process of making chocolate, hang out by a bonfire, visit the blacksmith shop or enjoy some hot chocolate or cider.
Dec. 22 from 5:30-8:45 p.m. at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon. Tickets with a tour of the mansion are $35 for adults and $25 for children ages 6-11 or without the tour they are $30 for adults and $20 for youth ages 6-11.
Messiah Sing-Along
Many people attend a performance of Handel’s Messiah at this time of year, but the Kennedy Center puts the audience at the center of the action. Join members of the Opera House Orchestra, guest soloists and a 200-member chorus made up of he Fort Washington Community Chorus, Heritage Signature Chorale, Arlington Chorale, Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church Choir and the Norther Virginia Chorale for this rousing Messiah Sing-Along, which has been entertaining the community since 1971. No matter how well you can carry a tune, Messiah is a lot of fun. Its popularity means seats in the Opera House are limited: Up to two tickets per person will be given out in the Hall of Nations beginning at 4:30 p.m., and would-be singers have been known to line up well in advance.
Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F St. NW. Admission is FREE!
Waterskiing Santa
Before he heads out to deliver presents to every child in the world through chimneys, Santa Claus likes to do something a bit more practical: water-ski the Potomac. For more than three decades, Waterskiing Santa has taken to the water on Christmas Eve, and the 30-minute act now involves props, elves, the Grinch, Jack Frost and other surprises. Once St. Nick gets back to dry land, he will pose for picture until 2 p.m.
