Cold, but Dry, Weekend on Tap in the DMV
It looks like it is going to be a cold, but dry, weekend in the DMV with temperatures in the mid- to upper-30s. Bundle up as you head out to do some holiday shopping or to look at the Christmas lights. There is plenty to do inside too, so keep warm.
Metro’s Yellow Line remains closed through Sunday as the bridge over the Potomac River receives structural repairs. Blue Line trains will alternate between Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center and Huntington and Largo Town Center every 16 minutes before 8 p.m. and every 20 minutes after. Green, Orange and Silver Line trains operate on a regular weekend schedule. Red Line trains will run on a regular weekend schedule until 10 pm on Saturday when they will operate every 12 mintues between Shady Grove and Glenmont and every 6 minutes between Grosvenor and Silver Spring. On Sunday, Red Line trains will run ever 15 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont and every 8 minutes between Shady Grove and Silver Spring during daylight hours.
Ballet West: The Nutcracker
Ballet West, the premier theater company in Utah, comes to the Kennedy Center to perform a new rendition of The Nutcracker, a version that received rave reviews upon its introduction to Salt Lake City audiences last year. Journey to the Land of Sweets on the wings of Tchaikovsky’s score as Ballet West presents an unforgettable holiday tale as you have never seen it before.

Ambreen Butt – Mark My Words
Pakistani-American artist Ambreen Butt is known for her distinctive interpretation of traditional Indian and Persian miniature painting. Butt focuses on female protagonists and politics in her work, tackling global issues and posing art as social commentary. The patterns, symbols and techniques of Butt’s work are on display in Ambreen Butt — Mark My Words. Recently, the artist began incorporating words into her pieces more often, as evidenced by the Say My Name series dedicated to forgotten casualties of American conflicts in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The exhibit features new works from this series on display for the first time.

Winter in Washington
You don’t have to go to the Mall to see D.C.’s iconic monuments: Winter in Washington brings those sights to CityCenterDC – sort of. The Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are among the 12-foot-high landmarks that will be carved out of 50,000 pounds of ice for a gigantic sculpture on display this weekend.

Talley’s Folly
Theater J’s production of Talley’s Folly, Lanford Wilson’s work about the difficulties of an interfaith romance, is set on a moonlit night in 1944 Missouri, where Matt Friedman, a middle-aged Jewish accountant, has only one chance to win the heart of Sally Talley, a 31 year-old ‘old maid’ from a bigoted Protestant family. After a lifetime of believing they will never truly belong in the world around them, they reawaken one another to love, ultimately finding that they do belong – together. The two-character play won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Theater J, currently on the run while its home base at the Edlavitch D.C. Jewish Community Center undergoes renovations, is producing the show at GALA Hispanic Theatre.

The Second City’s Love, Factually
America’s most beloved comedy collective, The Second City, takes on one of America’s most beloved holiday films, Love, Actually, in this farcical mash-up that will provide plenty of belly laughs. Indecent
This Arena Stage play about a play concerns censorship, cultural identity and the power of art. Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel penned this behind-the-scenes story of the creation and production of God of Vengeance, a 1923 play written by Sholen Asch that inspired both outcry and critical praise for its controversial themes. Indecent depicts the bravery of the artists involved through searing dialogue and unforgettable musical numbers.

The Panties, the Partner and the Profit
Acclaimed playwright David Ives takes on Carl Sternheim’s legendary trilogy, Scenes from the Heroic Life of the Middle Classes, in this new play The Panties, the Partner and the Profit: Scenes from the Heroic Life the of the Middle Class from Shakespeare Theatre Company. Jumping from Boston in 1950 to Wall Street in 1986 to modern-day Malibu, this satire of the American middle class will address issues large and small, with plenty of zaniness thrown in.

Russian Winter Festival

Holiday Family Day
Santa Claus might be zipping through the night sky on his sleigh later this month, but what else can you spy when looking toward the cosmos? The National Air and Space Museum hosts its Holiday Family Day where it will open the planetarium for an exhibition of the constellations that only appear during the winter solstice and learn how air and space technology make holiday travel, communication and shopping possible. There will also be story time, a scavenger hunt and a performance from the United States Air Force brass quintet.
