Shape of Water Takes Home Four Oscars
The Shape of Water was the big winner at last night’s 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony, taking home four Oscars for Best Picture, Directing for Guillermo del Toro, Original Score for Alexandre Desplat and Production Design for Paul Denham Austerberry, Shane Vieau and Jeffrey A. Melvin.
Frances McDormand won best actress in a leading role for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She previously won an Oscan in 1997 for Fargo and has received five nominations in total. Her win was hardly a surprise, since she took home just about every other acting award for playing Mildred Hayes, a woman whose rage over her daughter’s unsolved rape and murder creates a dominator effect of violence and destruction in the town.
During her acceptance speech, McDormand asked all the female nominees in the audience to stand. “Look around, ladies and gentlemen,” she said. “We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Invite us into your office in a couple days – or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best – and we’ll tell you all about them.”
Gary Oldman won best actor in a leading role for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. It was his first Oscar, although he had been nominated once before in 2012 for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Allison Janney won best supporting actress for her portrayal of the cruel and abusive mother of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. Sam Rockwell won best supporting actor for playing Jason Dixon, a racist police officer, in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Jordan Peele became the first African American to win for best original screen play for Get Out. Call Me By Your Name won best adapted screen paly for 89-year-old writer James Ivory. And Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for narrating Dear Basketball, which won best animated short film.
