Avoid Holiday Party Hook-Ups

As we quickly approach the holidays, many of us are seeing our offices start to slow down in time to celebrate. Some workplaces even arrange an office holiday party to show their appreciation to their staff and to give them time to let loose before holiday vacation. But “letting loose” at an office party is completely different than your friends’ holiday festivities.

For one, despite all urges you should NOT kiss your office crush. Maybe it seems like the right time, but trust me it isn’t. This can very easily ruin your workplace culture. If you see mistletoe just run away. Your co-worker should understand you want to keep things casual, and a office outing is not the right place or time.

Second, even if it is an open bar, you need to behave yourself. Know your limit. This is not limited to flirting, but overall social interactions. You have a reputation to live us to, so do so. Office holiday parties are fun and usually free, but that doesn’t mean you completely let loose.

Lastly, prioritize networking. Yes there will be alcohol in your system, but ignore your office crush if this gives you a chance to socialize with the top dogs. This is your chance to make a lasting impression, so do so. Talk about work and also about things not related to work. If your office crush cares about you, they will not rush you to the mistletoe and know you need time to grow professionally.

Office crushes are normal and expected. But this holiday season, put yourself first. If you need to advance your career, prioritize that. And do it the right way. Mingle with partners and bosses, and pay less attention to your loved one. If they care about you, they will encourage you to move ahead and not kiss under pressure. So go to your office party with confirdence and know you will make an impression without letting love interfere. Happy holidays and prosper!
