Best Beauty Brands Coming Out of the DMV
The DMV is known for many things — history, tourist attractions, politics — but it is not exactly known for a thriving beauty scene. Many of the biggest beauty brands come out of cities like New York, Paris or Los Angeles. Over the past few years, however, several new successful beauty businesses have popped up in the DMV. From small businesses to larger chains, area beauty producers are making a name for themselves. Here are a few of the best local beauty stores where you can stock up on your favorite products and find new ones, all while supporting local businesses:
Herban Lifestyle
Herban Lifestyle is a local bath and body product brand centered in Fairfax. The brand’s products only contain organic ingredients, so they are great for people with eczema or skin problems that are exacerbated by artificial fragrances or dyes. The company is very environmentally-conscious and considers sustainability in every aspect of its operation. It recycles, uses renewable energy in its facilities and even uses energy-efficient vehicles. Its soaps and shampoo bars come in a variety of scents, but its most unique products are DIY kits so you can make your own lip balm, bath salts or sugar scrubs.
SkinCando
SkinCando products include everything from bug spray to creams and balms. The line of products is handcrafted in the District and sold online. The founder of the company, Sara Damelio, created her skincare line to help fix skin issues like eczema. Soon after starting her business, Damelio began donating a portion of her products to U.S. military overseas. To get an idea of what these products feel like and see if you want them for yourself, you can visit the Emerald Door in Silver Spring, where you can get a facial using SkinCando products.
Oak Lane Soapworks
Oak Lane Soapworks is a soap company based in McLean, but its products can be found all around Northern Virginia and the District. The products are sold at several farmers markets throughout the area, as well as in several stores in Arlington and Falls Church. If you are not in any of these areas, you can also buy these moisturizing soaps online. The soaps are made with shea butter to soften the skin and are all hand-made. If you are a fan of natural scents like tea leaf, milk and honey, or basil spearmint, these soaps are for you. They even have seasonal scents like seaside and cucamelon for the summer.
Bluemercury
Bluemercury is a fairly well-known company in the DMV and started out with its first location in Georgetown. These beauty stores are similar to Ulta and Sephora, in that you can find a variety of beauty products ranging from skincare, to makeup, to hair care. The stores pride themselves on carrying quality products and having staff that can provide expert advice to customers. Although they now have stores all over the country, it all started out in D.C.
