Ensuring Love Triumphs Over Money

It’s hard not to talk about Powerball lately. It is trending everywhere, and it is getting unbelievable coverage across all media platforms. In case you live under a rock, yesterday’s drawing surpassed a record $1.5 billion. Yes, billion with a “B.” And everyone wanted in. Some were taking it very seriously while others had shameless fun playing their luck. So if you won (you probably didn’t unless you bought your ticket in Chino Hills, Calif.), what would you have done? Would you are with your significant other?

The other night, I convinced my boyfriend Brandon and his roommate Chris to watch The Bachelor with me in exchange for me buying them beer. During a commercial, we started talking about Powerball, and Chris asked us what would be the first thing we would do if we won. I went first and said I’d pay off my student loans. Then Brandon who said he’d buy me the engagement ring of my dreams. Needless to say, I felt like a selfish asshole after that. But if you won, you should not be shamed out of helping yourself, especially if you plan to help someone else out too. That could be your family, a charity or even your significant other.

So if you find yourself with an unforeseen amount of money in the near future, what could you do to balance money and love?

Getaway

If you suddenly fall into billions of dollars, you might need to go into hiding for a little anyway. Why not take your loved one on a special getaway. Maybe it will be somewhere sunny and romantic, or a travel spot the two of you have been eager to see. Regardless, your significant other will be happy you thought to include them and not leave them for Vegas and strippers.

Surprise, surprise

Depending on how serious you are with your significant other, you could surprise them with a gift or two. Maybe it’s something they have been saving up for or a down payment on a new place together. Let’s be honest, you can probably afford the whole building. Spoil your significant other as you wish, just don’t be reckless with your new money.

Bye, bye bills

If you’re not feeling a surprise, think bigger and pay off you and your loved one’s debt. Just imagine that. A world in which neither of you stress out over paying bills on time. And no more interest constantly building up. Lack of funds can put a relationship through some turmoil, so get rid of it all and date stress free.

If you were the lucky winner, it is okay to be a little selfish and spoil yourself. But don’t forget to spoil and take care of your family, the less fortunate and even your special loved one. Just don’t let the money change you no matter what. Don’t spend it all, and try to go on with your normal life with a cushion to catch you if you fall. Stay true to you and your loved ones. And if you are single and a sudden billionaire, watch out for gold diggers; they will be trolling for sure.
