Chefs Raise Funds for Food & Friends

This coming Monday, more than 1,500 guests will enjoy tastings from 60 of the region’s brightest culinary stars while raising more than $900,000 to support children and adults facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses.

Chef’s Best Dinner & Auction begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Ave. NW in Dupont. Enter through the T Street entrance. Individual tickets are $250 and available online. All but $50 is tax deductible.

The fundraiser for Food & Friends also includes an auction. Items sold at last year’s auction included a 7-night trip to Hawaii, five nights at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort, a 5-night stay in Panama, seven nights in Aruba and a luxury South African safari. A 3-night stay at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel with $1,000 in airfare from US Airways will be raffled.

Chaired by Celebrity Chef Jeff Black of the Black Restaurant Group will join the area’s hottest chefs to serve up gourmet creations that will make your taste buds sing. Among the chefs are Wes Morton of Art and Soul, Robb Duncan of Dolcezza Gelato, Susan Delbert of The Fourth Estate at the National Press Club, Bryan Yealy of Georgia Brown’s, Nicolas Flores of Hank’s Oyster Bar, Aldo Ramos of The Heights, David Shewmaker of Meridian Pint, Miles Vaden of Nage Restaurant and Michael Bonk of The Pig. Food and Friends provides specialized, nutritious meals, groceries, nutrition counseling and friendship to more than 2,900 individuals who will receive more than 1 million specialized meals this year alone. Meals are delivered six days a week, 52 weeks a year including holidays. Its staff of professional chefs and dietitians design meals that meet the special dietary needs of persons living with a broad range of illnesses. Services are free of charge to individuals and their families and caregivers living throughout the Metro D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area.

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, Food & Friends has delivered 15,850,775 meals to 22,687 clients since it opened in 1988. In 2012 alone, the organization’s volunteers delivered 1,119,370 meals including 93,280 monthly and 3,588 daily. They will serve an estimated 1,157,158 meals this year.
