Evil Dead Opens at Number 1
Sony’s Evil Dead led the way at the box office for the weekend of April 5 with $25.78 million. The R-rated horror remake performed well with its reported production budget of $17 million. Horror remakes typically do better when they open, but then attendance drops.
The race for second place was close, with Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation just edging out Fox’s The Croods. G.I. Joe: Retaliation grossed $20.88 million and The Croods grossed $20.65 million.
Universal’s Jurassic Park 3D debuted in a not-so-distant fourth place with $18.62 million. The 3D reissue of the Steven Spielberg directed 1993 blockbuster debuted a tad higher than the $17.29 million opening weekend performance of last year’s Titanic 3D and 17 percent below the $22.47 million start of last year’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D.
