It’s scorching hot all over the Nation. We call these the dog days of summer but instead of lamenting over the steaming asphalt – rejoice over the sun, pool parties and countless social events rooftop. Obviously it’s Summer and based on the number of “It’s HOT” tweets I see per day – we Washingtonians are not prepared for it. Let me digress – no matter how many years you have lived in DC – every summer it’s HOT, HUMID and STUFFY. Yet, every year the same complaints. I am guilty however, I’m not surprised by the level of radiating sun beams that alter the temperature to what sometimes feels like 1000 degrees. Ok, I’m exaggerating yes, but you too have experienced this heat and it’s an issue for those of us who want to keep cool while looking good.
For women you may think – less is more. On the contrary – little clothing can actually cause more heat exhaustion than a full cover up (dreaded thought I know, bare with me). I’m no doctor, nor expert but I am experienced and the more I am exposed to the sun the worse I feel at the end of the day. Furthermore, we can’t always go places half dressed. What about the networking events? Tea parties in NaNa’s outdoor, un-shaded garden? I wouldn’t suggest wearing a two piece suit however, a pair of seersucker shorts with a flowing tank top or a cotton blend maxi dress with layered frills could mean the difference from melting and sweating to looking cool and confident.
What about the gentlemen? Yes, I couldn’t forget about them (you). I love, love, love shopping for my male clients. Men’s wear is so simple and seamless. A dress shirt can be worn with denim, can be worn with khakis, can be worn with slacks. Interchangeable separates in the key of cotton. As with women – loose fitting is the better move. In essence, leave the skinnies for the fall/winter months. This season it’s all about bermuda shorts, colorful khaki pants, cotton blend button ups (w/ the sleeves rolled up).
