Hawkers Asian Street Food, with locations in Bethesda Row and Ballston Exchange, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. (Photo: Hawkers Asian Street Food/Facebook)
Hawkers Asian Street Food Files for Bankruptcy
Fast-casual restaurant chain Hawkers Asian Street Food filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 16 to maintain operational control of the company and protect it from an overreaching lender, the debtor said in a statement to Nation’s Restaurant News.
Hawkers serves Asian street food including baos, dumplings, egg rolls, wings, bibimbap, curry, ramen, noodles and craft cocktails.
The Orlando, Fla.-based Asian restaurant chain’s parent Hawkers Holdings and four affiliates filed petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida listing $10 million to $50 million in assets and liabilities.
In early 2023, the 15-unit chain signed “a debt capital agreement with the intention of growing the brand into a household name across the United States.” The company’s lender reportedly revealed an intention to gain control of the company, though Hawkers claims it has never missed a loan payment.
Hawkers has two locations in the DMV at 7117 Bethesda Lane in Bethesda Row, which opened in November 2020, and at 4201 Wilson Blvd., Suite 0170, Arlington, in Ballston Exchange, which opened in August 2022.
