3 Fun Weekend Trip Ideas for Winter

It is no secret that the DMV gets chilly in the winter time. Temperatures drop, we migrate indoors and life can definitely slow down for the better. But being inside can also cause a bit of cabin fever. If you are feeling antsy, plan a weekend trip to shake things up! Here are three great options for weekend trips from the DMV in winter time:

Plan a ski trip

The obvious option for embracing the cold winter weather is planning ski trip to a local destination. There are a number of ski resorts in Maryland and Virginia, including Deer Park, Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Ski Resort. If you are willing to drive a little further north, your options expand even more with ski resorts in Pennsylvania, such as Ski Liberty, Whitetail and Seven Springs.

Ski trips are great if you want to ski or snowboard – if that is something you enjoy. But ski trips are also great for “hitting” reset with a weekend in the mountains. The slower pace and cozy atmosphere helps you relax and enjoy the natural beauty of winter time. Bundle up, bring some hot cocoa (or perhaps a more adult beverage) and relax. Ski weekends are also a great way to get a group of friends together if you are looking to make a more social trip. Plus, with a large group of people, you wi’ll be able to split the cost of a bigger, luxury cabin, and truly make it a weekend to remember.

Head to New York

Especially around the holiday time, there are few better places to experience the spirit of the holidays than in New York City. New York City is easily accessible by train or bus, so you don’t have to worry about driving for this weekend trip. Head to Rockefeller Center to see the famous Christmas tree and ice rink, take a brisk walk around Central Park and see a show on Broadway. You can also head to a number of acclaimed restaurants and bars. There is so much to do in NYC, but you can fit in a few choice activities over a well-planned weekend getaway.

Head to Dallas for warmer weather

If you are truly over the cold winter temperatures in the D.C. metro area, a great option for a weekend trip is to get out of dodge to someplace warmer. Our suggestion? Hop on a plane and head to sunny Texas, specifically Dallas. With average year-round temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit in December, Dallas is a great place to thaw out from cold winter weather. Plus, it is a mecca of culture and shopping! You can even head to a football game if that is your speed, but purchase Dallas Cowboys tickets well in-advance, as they are notoriously hard to acquire.

One of the great things about living in the D.C. area is that it is highly accessible and easy to travel to other destinations by either plane, train or automobile. Don’t shut yourself in your home this winter – get out and explore somewhere new. Weekend trips are a great way to change things up and expose yourself to new experiences.
