Deciding to Support your Partner, or Not

It is normal for couples to disagree from time to time. You are not always going to agree on everything, which can lead to some private bickers or even an occasional public outburst. With social media added to the picture, there are many more ways your partner can make you mad by something they post or say that can be taken offensively and that you disagree with.

Let’s take Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West. Kanye always seems to be ranting about something outrageous and making it a public scandal. While Kim, who often disagrees with him, ends up taking his side to maintain a united front. But why? Is it right that she always takes his side? Should she voice her own opinion? Maybe. But perhaps she understands they have different opinions, but chooses to support her partner.

Whatever the case may be, it seems to work for them, but that doesn’t mean it works for everyone. If you absolutely disagree with your significant other, you don’t have to side with them. But if you choose to not stand with them will it break you two up, or can you move past it?

That’s tricky. Part of being in a relationship is knowing you can trust and rely on the other person. However, while you are expected to compromise from time to time, you shouldn’t cave and completely change who you are. So what if you find yourself in a situation where your partners’ actions completely cross your own?

This doesn’t mean you need to jump the gun and break up, but you should talk about it. You don’t simply need to stand by your partner just because you feel you have to. You should voice your opinion and why you disagree. Maybe it will open their eyes and make them realize they are wrong, or at least that their opinion isn’t golden.

Seems easy enough right? Yet so many people feel the need to keep their opinions to themselves to please their partner, which is not okay. If anything, not having things in common can spice things up. While having things in common is fantastic, being opposites can keep things alive and interesting. Plus, there is the saying that opposites attract.

So if your partner says something embarrassingly crazy, feel free to take action and not publically stand up for them. Instead let people know they have their own opinions and everyone is entitled to that. You can both still be a happy couple without agreeing about every single thing. But while you may not stand up for what your partner is saying, you should still be there in the long run. Agree to disagree and move on together.
