Are You Seeing Anyone?
It’s that time of the year: Single Awareness Season. As if Single Awareness Day isn’t enough on its own, the holiday season sheds more light on those living commitment free. The family is all gathered together and everyone’s trying to catch up, so love life is a popular topic that seems to pop up here and there. Most of the time, the question is innocent, but the reaction is what gets you. You hate feeling judged, but even worse, you hate lying. But how do you straight up tell grandma, no I’m not in a relationship, but don’t worry I’m sleeping around?
You’re young and single, so there’s no need to be monogamous. Yet, not everyone in the family gets dating in the 21st Century. So unless you are wiling to explain the world of Tinder and hookups, it’s best practice some answers and play out scenarios before you’re thrown into this unavoidable situation.
You know the questions are going to be rolling in left and right, so might as well have fun with it. Here are a couple ways you can bare the “are you seeing anyone” curiosities of the night.
Shots
If you don’t have a date or significant other this holiday season, don’t sweat it and cool down with a drink or two or three. You are going to have to deal with your lack of relationship questions, so why not be a little buzzed while answering. Just make sure not to be the “drunk” at the party because then granny will blame that for your lack of relationship. You can’t help it that you are single and ready to mingle, but just tone it done a bit with the family until they are asleep and the real party can start.
Story time
Maybe you’re okay with telling the straight up truth. You know your family isn’t super judgmental so lay it on them, but make it entertaining. Rather than focus on the struggle and woe of being single, talk about all the reckless fun times you have. You may even make all the taken people at the party jealous, as they recall those free wild, nights that are your life.
Trial and error
If you feel like you have nothing to lose, get experimental. If you’re super single, screw it and invite a stranger. No I don’t mean a complete random, but maybe invite your recent Tinder match and see if they’re down. Who knows, maybe this joke of a date will turn out spectacular and your family and date will get along perfectly. And worse case scenario, you use your guest as a decoy date and if the chemistry isn’t there, ditch them after the holidays are through. Or try bringing a different Tinder date to each holiday gathering to really mess with the family’s mind.
Being single is awesome when you look on the bright side. No one can hold you down and every night is an adventure. Don’t let your family’s reaction to your love life affect how you feel about it. All that matters is that you are happy and living it up. In the end, your family will love you no matter what, single or not.
