How to Not Surprise that Special Someone
Have a love hate relationship with surprises? So does everyone else. You hate the idea of the unknown, but every once in a while you don’t mind if your significant other surprises you out of the blue. Whether it be a new fun date idea or a sweet thoughtful gift, surprises in relationships can truly spice things up.
But not all surprises are good, and bad surprises can make a relationship go sour quickly. Sometimes partners use surprises to cover up some not-so-sexy bigger surprises. For instance, maybe your partner takes you out to dinner, only to explain why they are behind on rent. Or you get a lavish present to find out later on that they used your credit card to pay for it … surprise!
Unless your goal is to unleash the gates of hell, here are a few surprises to avoid in your relationship:
Causal cancellations
If you and your significant other have had set plans for awhile, it’s never a good idea to bail at the last minute. While telling them the bad news over coffee might ease the pain, don’t sugarcoat the truth. Admit that you have other plans or something came up. Your partner is going to be mad no matter what, so just be sincere and let them down easy. In this case, a happy surprise before the bad surprise might benefit the both of you in this awkward situation.
Surprise guest
Two’s a party, three’s a crowd. If you think buying someone’s forgiveness is the way to go, good luck. No matter how nice you say it, cheating is the worst. Personally, no surprise gift can compensate for a surprise act like cheating. Just keep your legs closed and don’t surprise your partner with an unexpected third party.
Liar, liar
Sugar coated lies are just as hurtful. Just because you reveal your lies at a fancy dinner, doesn’t mean the aftermath will be any better. Just be honest. Use your words and not your wallet. No one wants to be surprised with a mouth full of lies, so build up some courage and be open with your partner. While bad news isn’t pleasant, it’s better to hear sooner than later.
Bottom line
Keep you surprises positive. Plan new, exciting dates and thoughtful gifts. Don’t surprise your partner with lies, broken promises and deception. Surprises are a great way to jump start your relationship, so think of something special, and spontaneously do it. When thinking of a surprise, make sure it’s something that’ll improve your relationship, not hinder it. Sexy, sweet surprises are the best, so plan something special for your loved one soon.
