Four Metro Stations to Close for Inauguration

Three Metrorail stations will close from Sunday evening until Tuesday morning and a fourth will be closed all day Monday for the Inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, which falls on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The following stations will be closed from 8 p.m. on Jan. 19 through 5 a.m. on Jan 21:

  • Federal Triangle (Blue-Orange-Silver)
  • Mount Vernon Square-Convention Center (Green-Yellow)
  • Archives-Navy Memorial (Green-Yellow)
  • .

The Pentagon station on the Blue and Yellow lines will be closed on Jan. 20.

Trains will bypass closed stations.

Gallery Place will be open for transfers between the Red, Yellow and Green lines only. Riders will not be able to enter or exit the station on Sunday and Monday. Yellow Line customers traveling north of Mt. Vernon Square should transfer to the Green Line at Gallery Place. Green Line customers
heading south towards Huntington should transfer to the Yellow line at Gallery Place or L’Enfant Plaza.

Smithsonian was previously announced as closed but will now be open as events on the National Mall have been canceled.

Some entrances closed

Some downtown station entrances will be closed, as well. Th Vermont Avenue and I Street NW enterance at McPherson Square willbe closed from 8 p.m. Jan. 19 until 5 a.m. Jan. 21, but the 14th and I Street NW entrance will be open. The F Street/National Building Museum entrance at Judiciary Square will be closed from 4 p.m. on Jan. 19 to 5 a.m. to Jan. 20, but the Fourth and D Street NW entrance will remain open.

In addition, the Union Station Metro station cannot be accessed through the Amtrak/Union Station entrance from 4 p.m. on Jan. 20 to 5 a.m. on Jan. 21. Entrances at First Street NE and Massachusetts Avenue NE will remain open.

Farragut West and Metro Center previously had some station entrance closures, but all entrances will now be open.

Metro opens at 5 a.m. Monday

Instead of opening early at 4 a.m. on Jan. 20 to accommodate crowds, Metrorail will open at its regular 5 a.m. and operate on a regular weekday schedule. Red Line trains will run every 5-6 minutes, Green and Yellow Line trains will arrive every 6 minutes, and Blue, Orange and Silver Line trains operate every 10-12 minutes.

“Inaugurations are typically high ridership events,” Metro said in a news release. “Be prepared for long lines, full trains and buses, and the possibility of intermittent delays due to large crowds.”

Metro says riders should expect crowding at other stations, including L’Enfant Plaza, Metro Center, Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom in D.C. and Pentagon City, Crystal City and Rosslyn in Virginia.

Metro hours are 5 a.m.-1 a.m. on Jan. 17, 7 a.m.-1 a.m. on Jan. 18, 7 a.m.-midnight on Jan. 19 and 5 a.m.-midnight on Jan. 20. Metrobus will run on a Saturday Supplemental schedule and will have detours in downtown D.C. from Jan. 18-21. MetroAccess subscription trips are cancelled on Jan. 20.

Special SmarTrip card

Metro will sell a special inauguration SmarTrip card with a picture of Trump starting Jan. 15 at the Ashburn, Forest Glen, Franconia-Springfield, Glenmont, Greenbelt, King St-Old Town, L’Enfant Plaza, Metro Center, Navy Yard-Ballpark, New Carrollton, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Shady Grove, Stadium-Armory, Union Station, Vienna and Washington Dulles International Airport stations. Cards will be in select fare vending machines.

Road closures

The D.C. government has also provided an inauguration information web page detailing road closures, security information and other preparations for the event.
