Cover Your Roots at Home

I am a brunette, but highlight my hair to keep my dirty blonde look. I think it looks better with my skin tone, otherwise I look sickly and deathly with super dark hair.

This requires a lot of hair care, TLC and maintenance that my schedule sometimes doesn’t allow. From traveling back and forth from D.C. to New York City and scheduling an appointment with enough lead time to make sure I get my favorite colorist who knows how to match my blonde shade against my brown roots, there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and when I found out I had booked an event last minute that asked that my roots be touched up, I flipped out. It was late at night and salons do not open up until 10 a.m. So I asked some friends for help.

A friend had a product called, Root Touch Up Makeup for Hair by Madison Reed. Makeup for hair? Will the product look good in photos? Is it going to smear all over and look totally fake? Is it going to match to my hair, even? I had no other options but to try it.

The product comes in eight shades that match your hair color to a T and is made from natural, safe ingredients, such as micro-milled pigments that make the color stick and look very natural. It is rain-, sweat- and pillow-proof and stays on your hair until you wash it out. The cute compact of color with the brush on applicator lasts for about 60 uses.

What I noticed is the product claimed to cover up grays instantly. Because of how thick it settles on your head, I can see it packing a punch to cover grays. I don’t have any yet, but it perfectly blended my blonde to my dark brown hair, and I looked like I had freshly dyed hair from the salon.

Madison Reed is all about great hair health I found out, so their site is definitely worth checking out. If you go here and invite someone you get $15 credit and they do too.

Some similar products to check out include Root Cover Up by Color Wow, which is sold at your local Walmart and CVS, and Fill-In Powder from Cover Your Gray, which is very affordable and sold at Bed Bath and Beyond.

These would also make cute Mother’s Day gifts to include in a basket. If you still have not found the perfect Mother’s Day gift look here for some other great ideas.
