Will Parents’ Past Determine Your Love Life?

With the new revival of Gilmore Girls, everyone and their mother has been re-watching the series nonstop. Lorelei and Rory have an incredibly close relationship that most mother-daughter duos would envy. But can being too close to your parents hinder your love life?

Personally, I don’t think that is possible. However, I do think it is possible to have our parents dating style rub off on us. Your perception of love and relationships can easily be influenced from the actions we see growing up. This doesn’t mean anything is set in stone though. Just because your mom married the first person she met doesn’t mean you will do the same. And the other way around, if your mom dated around that doesn’t mean you will seek multiple suitors the same way.

You are your own person and can make your own dating destiny. But if you are going to take in some love inspiration, follow these Gilmore approved guidelines:

Find someone who challenges you

Dating is all fun and games until you find someone really special worth settling down for. But if you are willing to let your freak flag fall, it has to be for the right person. Not only do you need to be compatible, but you need to challenge each other. You want someone who will encourage you to be the best version of yourself, and who will grow with you. Now that person may be worth ditching dating and entering a relationship.

Don’t be afraid of falling in love

Love can be scary but the risk is worth the fall. Don’t just jump into love every time you date someone, but when the feeling is there you can’t deny it. If you runaway from love, you aren’t living. So guard your heart, but don’t lock it away from something good.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

Everyone has a type, but feel free to venture and try something new every now and then. Why limit yourself? Maybe your special someone isn’t someone you would typically go for. So date outside the box and have fun!

Parents are great role models. They can be your best friend or your greatest mentor. But when it comes to love, you can follow by example or walk your own destiny. Whatever the case may be, never ever let dating come between your family. That is the best love out there — it’s irreplaceable!
