Center of the Plate Takes Center Stage
In case you didn’t know, D.C. is smack in the middle of the annual Environmental Film Festival. Now in its 22nd year, the festival features more than 200 documentaries playing at 75 metro area venues including museums, embassies, libraries, universities and local theaters. Food, an important piece of any ecosystem, is the focus of many films. If you are looking to know a little bit more about what is on your plate and how it got there, ruminate on these flicks for an education on the production of sustenance on a large and tiny scales.
Food Savers
European households throw away 100 billion Euros worth of food each year. In Food Savers, Valentin Thurn examines this trend looking at all points of the food supply chain. Thurn also highlights individuals and businesses that are working to counteract the excess through inventive ways.

Growing Cities
As part of the Chipotle Food and Agriculture Film Series, Dan Susman’s Growing Cities takes a cross-country look at the blossoming urban farming movement. Transforming vacant lots, rooftops and backyards, urban farming is providing additional sources of veggies and fruits to urbanites, producing positive effects on communities and health.

Farming for the Future: Enduring Traditions – Innovative Practices
A series of films and discussions focusing on the many and varied farming methods in use throughout the East Coast. The session will take a look at urban farmers in Brooklyn as well as traditional farmers throughout Virginia’s Appalachia and Piedmont regions. Following the films, a panel discussion featuring the farmers and filmmakers will examine agrarian production and the state of farming.
