Prenups Establish Expectations
Though current statistics tell us that the chance of a successful marriage is about the same odds as winning a coin toss, people are still jumping the broom.
I think that’s great. I have to think that with all the divorce reported, that people are putting some thought into what it is they are doing. Or, maybe not since they know they can just divorce relatively easily if they like.
The prenup
Whatever the case, I am one who believes that you have to build your relationship on your own terms. So, imagine my delight when, courtesy of BrainPickings.org, I stumbled upon this gem of a letter from the famous, female aviator Ameila Earhart to her future husband, George Putnam.
Every sentence, for me, is fierce and confident honesty that simultaneously is vulnerable truth. Surprisingly, some of her 1931 views are a little too radical for me. Though, I have been asked twice if I would sign a prenup).
What ever your stipulations may be for a long-term relationship, I think we could all stand to take a page out of Ms. Earhart’s (she never went by Mrs. Putnam) book and think about what we really want, boldly and honestly. And unapologetically, let it be known.
