2014’s Hottest Looks

Once again, the hairstyle forecast looks promising for those of us who are less than adept in styling our own hair. The top trends share a relaxed vibe that’s right for just about any spring/summer event.

Loose waves

Also known as “mermaid waves,” these loose, tousled waves can be easily achieved by plaiting damp hair and letting it dry overnight. I actually do this a lot (even before it became trendy) because it’s so easy and fuss-free. Mermaid waves look great with a center part for an effortless, off-duty model look.

Edgy bobs

The bob is back (from 2013) and it’s edgier than ever. This season’s bob comes in a variety of textures from classically smooth to extremely edgy choppy, textured looks. Short bangs and boldly contrasting hair color takes this season’s bob to the next level of cool.

Short

Those who are tired of struggling with long hair (you know who you are) may want to take the plunge and try one of 2014’s fashion-forward short cuts: the pixie cut, a punk-inspired cut or a close crop. Short hair brings greater emphasis to your eyes, so use this opportunity to take your eye makeup up a notch.

Messy plaits/up-dos

Since my braiding technique leaves much to be desired, I wholeheartedly welcome this trend. I never fail at creating a perfectly messy braid or up-do for a look that’s both laidback and elegant.

Extreme side-parts

One of this season’s hottest looks is the side-swept down-do, which evokes a 1930s androgynous glamour. When determining which side to part your hair on, Peter Gray of L’Oreal suggests taking a selfie instead of relying on a mirror, since they can “reverse and distort your image.” Once you’re sure of your more flattering side, part your hair and sweep to one side and you’re set!
