Storm Jonas is set to arrive Friday afternoon and what started as a weekend packed with events has now turned into a weekend with very little to do besides hibernate with your last-minute grocery haul. Although the majority of events in the DMV have been canceled, one sole survivor stands! If you’re in the Navy Yard neighborhood, be sure to grab your winter coat and a ticket for Ice Yards. But be sure to check the events page before you do. Also check our list of canceled events to see if your plans for this weekend have been rescheduled for another date and time.

If you haven’t heard already, Metro will be shutdown for the entire weekend starting at 11 p.m. on Friday. Bus service will operate under a “severe” snow weather plan meaning buses will only operate on major corridors until 5 p.m. Be sure to check with WMATA on routes. And please, stay safe!

Ice Yards 2016

With promises of ski chalet vibes, boozy sno cones and live music, it is hard to believe there is a better way to spend a couple of chilly hours than at Ice Yards 2016. If you’re able to dig yourself out of Storm Jonas, head on down to Yards Park for this snow-themed gathering for a little bit of winter fun. Snow or shine!

Washington Auto Show

The annual Washington Auto Show allows manufacturers to exhibit what they’ve got and demonstrate what they’re working on, both for policy-makers and the car-buying public. Gearheads can gawk at more than 700 rides from 42 manufacturers, from concept vehicles and exotic ports car to historic vehicles, like the 1915 Model T Ford.

Jan. 25-31 from noon on weekday and 10 a.m. on weekends at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt. Vernon Place NW. Adult tickets are $12, children’s tickets are $5 and VIP tour tickets are $40.

Music with a Menu http://dconheels.com/?p=21942 Wed, 08 Jan 2014 14:12:55 +0000 http://dconheels.com/?p=21942 Groove and Food

This week I found myself in Vienna, Va., at local venue Jammin Java sipping some tea, having a meal and catching a show. Located in a strip mall far from the D.C. music scene, Jammin Java has nevertheless established itself as the little-coffee-shop-that-could, brewing up 12 years of consistently strong acts. Here you will find a garden variety of performers seven nights a week with good food to accompany. Always a sucker for a suited-up hot dog, I particularly enjoyed their selection of tubed pork, like the BBQ Dog (baked beans, cole slaw and Famous Dave’s rich and sassy sauce).

Although live music is never my first look on a week night, I enjoyed my Java so supremely that I added yet another resolution to this year’s growing list: see more shows! Live music and good food vibrate and rejuvenate the soul and we could all use a little of that! Seek out some rhythm and food at these joints in and around D.C.

The Hamilton

Already a lauded restaurant of the Clyde’s Restaurant Group in its own right, the Hamilton at 14th and F Streets NW also features live acts. The shows are well curated and you get gem acts that are quality but not huge, like Alejandro Escovedo playing Apr. 26. The early fan will get seats in the limited table area, but all can order from their live menu. I haven’t made it here yet, but definitely on the set list for me.

The Birchmere

Rivaled only by Wolf Trap, the Birchmere at 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, is home to the classic talent circuit in D.C. Its calendar features the stars who have survived their prime and are refining and redefining their sound to old fans and new audiences. The seated setup also affords visitors a more laid back concert experience. No need to fear the mosh pit here. Order fine beers by the pitcher and food by the platter.

Hope these suggestions get your head nodding and feet taping. Get out there and make some music in 2014!
