Universal Picture’s Lone Survivor delivered the second best January opening weekend in history with a final result of $37.85 million earned between Friday and Sunday (Jan. 10-12). That beats 1997’s Star Wars: Special Edition ($35.9 million) and lands just behind 2008’s Cloverfield ($40.1 million). Counting the film’s limited release grosses, Lone Survivor‘s domestic total is $38.23 million.

Frozen landed in second place last weekend, its seventh in wide release, with $14.7 million, a 25 percent drop from the previous weekend. Disney’s animated sensation has earned $317.3 million domestically so far and moved into the 34th spot on the all-time domestic chart.

Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street pulled in another $8.84 million last weekend, down 33 percent from the previous weekend. The controversial comedy/drama has earned $78.4 million domestically up to this point. Following Sunday night’s Golden Globe win for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this Thursday’s likely Oscar nominations for the film, Wolf should still have quite a bit of life left in it through January and February.

Lionsgate’s The Legend of Hercules earned a disappointing $8.87 million in its debut weekend. The 3D movie was unable to capitalize on leading man Kellan Lutz’s semi-popularity from his appearances in the Twilight films.

American Hustle took in another $8.3 million last weekend, a 33 percent drop from the previous weekend, which helped it cross the $100 million mark. Domestic earnings now stand at $101.3 million, a figure which will continue to climb following Sunday’s Golden Globe victories for Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and the film itself’s win for Best Musical or Comedy. American Hustle is widely expected to rack up a number of Oscar nominations later this week.

August: Osage County fared well in its 905-theater expansion last weekend. With $7.7 million in all so far, the all-star ensemble led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts has easily been the film’s best advantage so far. Although considered an underdog this awards season, any love from the Academy on Thursday could help strengthen the film’s long term prospects.

Superman was reborn at the box office as the big-budget gamble Man of Steel cleared the box office its opening weekend in a single bound clearing $116.6M in a single bound. Directed by Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill takes on the title role in the movie that also features an Oscar-caliber cast including Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon and Laurence Fishburne. Christopher Nolan, who successfully rebooted the Batman franchise for the studio, produced Man of Steel. Much of the film’s story involves Superman’s two dads from Krypton and Earth and how they molded him, perfect for the Father’s Day weekend.

Opening far behind in second place was the new doomsday comedy This is the End from Sony with $20.7M over three days and $33M since its Tuesday night launch. It was a respectable opening especially considering the distraction Clark Kent had over the target audience of young men. The raunchy R-rated comedy stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Jay Baruchel.

Holding steady in third place was Lionsgate’s heist thriller Now You See Me with $11M, down 42 percent, for a robust total to date of $80.7M. The top-grossing installment of the franchise, Universal’s Fast & Furious 6 followed with $9.6M dropping 51 percent pushing the domestic tally to a muscular $219.7M. Last week’s top film The Purge plunged 76 percent to $8.3M. The micro-budgeted $3M movie has nonetheless raked in a healthy $52M in 10 days for Universal. The Fox comedy The Internship fell 59 percent in its second weekend to $7.1M putting the Vince Vaughn-Owen Wilson flick at a disappointing $31.1M.

The summer’s most notable flop so far, Will Smith’s critically panned father-son sci-fi adventure After Earth, fell 62 percent to $4.1M for a lousy $54.5M total to date for the pricey $130M gamble. Flirting with the quadruple century mark, Iron Man 3 rounded out the top ten with $3M in its seventh weekend, down 49 percent.
