How to Use a Dutch Oven While Camping

Camping can be great, but sometimes the food available might not seem as exciting. Although marshmallows and hotdogs on sticks can be fun, if you are really hungry, they probably won’t be enough. Luckily, by bringing a Dutch oven camping, you will have access to a huge number of delicious recipes.

Keep reading for a complete guide on Dutch oven cooking, as well as how to use it next time you are camping.

What is a Dutch oven?

A Dutch oven is a large, cast iron pot. It features a tight lid and has handles on both sides. Cast iron is great for cooking a wide variety of meals.

It is a poor conductor of heat, which means that it cooks things at a slow and steady temperature. It then stays hot for a very long time. This makes it perfect for cooking things that need a slower rate and a low, consistent temperature.

What can you make with a Dutch oven?

Do you enjoy cooking soups and stews? A Dutch oven can make them easily and deliciously. Any meat you use will fall off the bone, and vegetables will soften nicely. The slow cooking will also bring out the flavor of any ingredients you use.

A Dutch oven can also work great for bread and cakes. If you enjoy round artisanal loaves of bread, get ready to bake your own. Your Dutch oven will cook your bread slowly, evenly and maintain moisture levels.

Did you know you can even fry foods in a Dutch oven? As they withstand high temperatures and cook evenly, you can make dishes such as french fries. If you are a foodie, make sure you own a Dutch oven. The number of things you will be able to make with it will seem limitless.

How can you use it while camping?

Camping with a Dutch oven is similar to using it in your house, but there are a few things you should consider. First, make sure your Dutch oven has legs. It should have at least three. This will enable the coals to sit underneath.

You should also consider how many people you will be feeding. Are you and one other person the only people dining? If so, an 8-inch oven with 2 quarts should be plenty. Or are you and your family of 8 going? Then make sure you choose a bigger option, like a 12-inch with a 6-quart capacity.
